by Jennifer

The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and India holds pivotal significance for the South Asian and Southeast Asian regions. With both nations emerging from impactful G20 presidencies in 2022 and 2023 respectively, their synergistic strengths have come to the forefront. Bilateral trade has surged, reaching US$ 38 billion in 2023, reflecting the potential for enhanced regional growth and economic diversification. Additionally, cooperation in areas such as maritime security, climate action, technological innovation, and women’s empowerment underscores the depth of collaboration between the two nations.

The Proposed Event:

On 2–3 May 2024, the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Jakarta, will convene the “Jakarta Futures Forum: Blue Horizons, Green Growth.” The two-day international conference aims to explore collaborative solutions for sustainable development through an inaugural plenary session and four thematic pillars.

Thematic Pillars:

1. Capitalizing on Climate: Road to a Sustainable Future: India and Indonesia, facing significant climate challenges, can play pivotal roles in shaping global climate action. Collaborative efforts can enhance climate resilience and contribute to sustainable development by sharing best practices, innovations, and policies.

2. Claiming the Digital Horizon: Strategic investments and policy support have driven digital innovation in emerging markets like India and Indonesia. Understanding bilateral ties’ role in leveraging complementarities across digital transformation journeys can accelerate market access and economic growth.

3. The Road to Equality: Investing in Women-Led Sustainable Development: Gender equality is essential for resolving global challenges and promoting sustainable development. Investing in women-led development is crucial for addressing economic instability, inadequate healthcare, climate change, and conflicts.

The Jakarta Futures Forum aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among governments, multilateral organizations, the private sector, civil society, and the startup community. By exploring avenues for cooperation in climate action, digital innovation, and women’s empowerment, the forum seeks to chart a path towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for the region.
